Fair-Trade
Indigo Wholefoods is committed to stocking a wide range of fair-trade products to
support producers in the third world.
The first fair-trade marked product was coffee from Mexico. It was given its accreditation
by Max Havelaar in the Netherlands in 1988. The Fairtrade Foundation in the UK was
set up in 1992 and the first accredited products hit the shelves in 1992.
The familiar fairtrade mark assures customers that the products they are buying meet
the criteria of the Fairtrade Foundation and other accrediting bodies around the
world.
The price that is paid by companies buying fair-trade products from producers is
split into two parts.
The fair-trade minimum price is the starting point of negotiations between the buying
organisation and the producer organisation. The price is set at a level that covers
sustainable production of the product. However, if the market price exceeds the
fair-trade minimum price the buying organisation is required to pay the market price.
The fair-trade premium is paid on top of the agreed price into a fund to support
education, healthcare and improvements to farming infrastructure.

Union Hand-Roasted Coffee was started in 2001 by Jeremy Torz and Steven Macatonia.
While not all of Union Hand Roasted Coffee’s products have the fairtrade mark, they
are all bought fairly, ethically and sourced from farms and cooperatives which meet
internationally agreed labour standards. These are set above the standards required
for fairtrade certification. Union Hand-Roasted Coffee is a member of the Ethical
Trading Initiative.

Divine Chocolate was launched in 1998 by The Day Chocolate Co. Not only does Day
pay its growers in Ghana the fair-trade minimum price and the fair-trade premium,
but the growers co-operatives have shares in Day. This gives them considerable input
into the decision making process. In 2000 Divine Chocolate was supported by Comic
Relief to produce the Dubble Bar aimed at a childrens market.
